He is the most interesting character of the book. He is totally a mystery. Almost everybody thinks he is a stupid boy which he is not. They don't even know his real name. Because he doesn't answer any questions, he doesn't speak to anybody. He just digs his daily hole and spends the rest of the day alone and silent until Stanley comes to the camp. That's why they gave him the nickname "Zero".
One day he sees Stanley reading a letter from his mother and asks him to teach him reading and writing. During writing lessons he tells about his past. he talks just to Stanley. so we can guess there is a connection between these people.
Compared to his body size he is very strong, too. He beats Zigzag up when he sees him in a fight with Stanley. He is really protective of Stanley. Towards the end of the book we learn that the one who actually stole the shoes, which Stanley is accused of stealing, is Zero. So I think the reason why Zero is so protective of Stanley is the pressure of conscience.
The most interesting characteristic of Zero is his mathematical intellingence. He can calculate numbers in his mind very quickly. This is very unexpectable because he has never been to a school. He can't even read. However he is a smart boy opposite of what everybody else thinks.
